Microsoft is talking about Windows 10 Mobile again and this time they’re focusing on its grand plan to release a 64-bit version of the operating system for current devices.

The latest smartphones from Microsoft are powered by a Snapdragon processor capable of supporting a 64-bit operating system. However, at this moment in time, the software giant believes it is best to run a 32-bit version of Windows 10 Mobile for the time being.

When could we possibly see a 64-bit version of Windows 10 Mobile? Well, from what we have come to understand, this will happen with the Redstone update set for 2017. The big question at this time is exactly why Microsoft would want to create a 64-bit version seeing as it doesn’t appear to offer any necessary advancements.

“At the time, some questioned why Microsoft developed a 64-bit system; today most computers are 64-bit systems and even our phones will soon have a 64-bit operating system,” says Microsoft.

It all boils down to Continuum.

With Continuum, users can use their Windows 10 Mobile devices as a computer by attaching it to a monitor. It’s the single most unique thing about the platform right now, and although the software giant appears to be on the verge of killing Windows on Mobile, Continuum is something it could keep around.

Apart from Continuum, Microsoft wants users to use x86 apps on devices with an ARM processor. This will be done via an emulator of course and as such, devices will require RAM more than 4GB. It should be interesting to see if Microsoft will ever be able to accomplish all of this seeing as the company’s mobile ambitions have been altered drastically.
