Hey there geeks and movie buffs! We know 2016 has been a ball when it comes to some big sci-fi movie releases. This year in particular, has been bombarded with tons of superhero movies with some of your favorite Marvel and DC characters, in live-action roles. While several people consider this superhero invasion of Hollywood as bad, it is certainly a gala time for the geeks and nerds. So if you’re a movie buff and want to know the best sci-fi movie releases this year, check out the list below.

1. Star Wars: Rogue One

Also known as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is a standalone movie set before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope. The film closely follows the events leading to the creation of the iconic ‘Death Star’ and formation of the Galactic Empire. Since this story is set at the very beginning, even people who’re unfamiliar with the Star Wars lore can easily watch it without getting confused.

2. Captain America: Civil War

Chances are, you’ve already watched this masterpiece. Captain America: Civil War is the third movie in the titular Marvel Superhero film series, that picks up from where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off. Chris Evans, wonderfully reprises his role of the war hero and “Superoldier”, Steve Rogers A.k.a. Captain America. The movie centers on a tight knit plot where the Avengers are torn apart, putting Cap and Iron Man on opposing ends. Moreover, the movie also introduces several new characters, including a fresh take on Peter Parker A.k.a. Spiderman and Black Panther.

3. Dawn of Justice: Batman v Superman

While the movie was received by viewers with mixed reviews, there’s no denying that Dawn of Justice was ‘visually stunning’ in every aspect. Dawn of Justice is the sequel to Man of Steel (2013) and pits Superman against the Dark Knight. It also sets the stage for the upcoming Justice League with the introduction of some iconic superheroes such as Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg. If you watch it without comparing with Marvel movies, this is certainly the best damn portrayal of Batman in a live-action role, hands down. For best results, watch the director’s cut and you will start appreciating this movie.

4. Independence Day Resurgence

One movie that actually took viewers by surprise is Independence Day Resurgence. While its predecessor released in 1996 was a major commercial success, no one thought the overused plot of earth being invaded by aliens would matter to anyone. Nevertheless, the movie actually turns out to be highly entertaining, despite of actor Will Smith not reprising his role from the former movie. Resurgence takes place 20 years after the previous invasion and shows a unified earth with advanced technology. They soon realize that they are under threat of another attack, which is much bigger than the last one. Although this movie wasn’t nearly as successful as the first Independence Day film, its tight plot and pace makes it an enjoyable watch.

5. Assassin’s Creed

If you loved the game, then there’s no way why you shouldn’t be fired up for this movie. All set to be released during Christmas week, Assassins Creed is set in same universe as the games and follow Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) as he is forced to relive the memories of his ancestor who lived during Spanish Inquisition. The movie is set for release on 21st of this month and will feature several iconic items and other stuff found from the game.

6. Dr. Strange

It would be a crime to call this science fiction. But since the title says ‘Doctor’, there’s certainly some science behind this. Dr. Strange stars’ British actor Benedict Cumberbatch in the role of titular superhero Dr. Stephen Strange. The story tells of his origin and how he turned from an arrogant neurosurgeon to earth’s Sorcerer Supreme. The movie is loaded with breathtaking visuals and one of the best final showdowns in a long time. Since the events are set in the same universe as other Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, it is a must watch for fans.

7. X-Men: Apocalypse

Most of you certainly gave up on the X-Men franchise after fails like The Last Stand and Wolverine. But ever since First Class, there’s certainly a lot more interesting happening with these movies. The latest part in the franchise ‘Apocalypse’ takes place after Days of the Future Past, where Charles Xavier and his band of mutants, face off against ‘En Sabah Nur’, a godlike mutant considered to be the very first.

Choosing just a handful from a heap of amazing movies released this year is certainly tough. The above list includes the best movie releases this year that every science fiction or a gadget head must watch. These movies are a great watch even with people who’re not into this genre, purely as visual masterpieces. Hope you agree with our list.
