The Nest thermostat is one of the best smart devices to have in your home, especially if you’re conscious about your energy uses. It automatically will change the temperature in your home if needed to keep your home comfortable as well as monitor your energy usage. The best part of it is that it communicates information to you that is easily manageable.

The Nest thermostat will communicate different forms of information to you by the color of the face of the device. Each color corresponds to a different notification for what is going on. The Nest thermostat will also send this information to your smartphone or the device you use to manage your Nest thermostat.

Since each color means something different, it is useful to be able to decipher what each color means without having to grab your smartphone or go to the Nest hub in your home if you have one.

What Each Color Means

The Nest thermostat is very communicative and will tell you all sorts of information going on in your home. Not only does it manage the temperature, but it also records the energy usage and will help you make adjustments to become more eco-conscious.

Each color the Nest thermostat face changes will tell you something different. However, these colors and communications aren’t available on all Nest thermostat products.

Red

When you see red flashing on the Nest thermostat, it means that the battery is low, but it is currently being charged.

How to Fix:

If you have the red flashing light, you shouldn’t have to do anything. If you want to speed up the charging, follow your specific Nest Thermostat’s instructions for charging it to a complete charge.

Blue

If your Nest thermostat is flashing blue on a Heat Link for Nest Thermostat E and 3rd Gen Nest Learning Thermostat, it can mean one of two things.

If it is slowly blinking blue, the Nest Thermostat is connecting to the Nest App. This option will also be triggered if you restart the Heat Link. If it is quickly blinking blue, the Heat Link is going through a software update.

Green

A flashing green Nest thermostat on Heat Link for Nest Thermostat E signifies that the heating that is controlled by the thermostat is on. If it is a solid green light, it means that manual heating for the Heat Link is on.

If the Heat Link is paired with a 3rd and 2nd Gen Nest Learning Thermostat, a solid green light means that everything is working. If the heating and hot water lights are also a solid green, everything is working correctly too.

If you see a green flashing light on the Heat Link 2nd Gen Nest Learning Thermostat, it means that the heat is turning on.

If there is a flashing green light on any Nest Thermostat, it means that it is in the process of a software update.

While there isn’t anything to fix for a green light on a Heat Link for Nest Thermostat E, if you want the automatic heating turned back on, all you have to do is press the button on the Heat Link to turn it back to automatic heating.

Orange

Seeing an orange flashing Nest thermostat means the same as a flashing red light; it needs to be recharged.

Follow the instructions to charge your specific Nest Thermostat model.

Yellow

If your Nest thermostat is flashing yellow on a Heat Link for Nest Thermostat E, it is trying to tell you that something needs your attention. Check your Nest Thermostat face to see what it is trying to tell you.

If you have a solid yellow light on your 3rd Gen Nest Learning Thermostat, it means that your Nest Thermostat isn’t connected to the Heat Link. If the heating and hot water lights are green while the status light is yellow, it also means that it’s not connected to the Heat Link and can’t control the heat or hot water.

If you see a flashing yellow light on a 2nd Gen Nest Learning Thermostat, it means that the heat is in manual mode.

If the Nest Thermostat is flashing yellow on a Heat Link for Nest Thermostat E, check the Nest Thermostat face to follow any further instructions.

If the 2nd Gen Nest Learning Thermostat is in manual mode, all you have to do to change it back to automatic is press the heat button on the Heat Link.

Are There Any Other Colors the Nest Thermostat can Flash?

The Nest thermostat uses many different colors to flash notifications to you. Are there any other colors that the Nest thermostat will flash to show you a notification?

When you’re charging your Nest thermostat, there will be a flashing light that will tell you that it is charging. The color of the light will change depending on how full the battery is. Some models don’t change color when the battery is charging, but the flashing will stop when charging is complete.

On a 2nd Gen Nest Learning Thermostat, it could be flashing yellow and green. If it is quickly flashing yellow and green, it is being reset to factory defaults. If it is slowly blinking yellow and green, it is searching for the thermostat to pair with.

If the Nest Thermostat is blinking white, it means that it is reconnecting to the router.

Conclusion

The Nest thermostat is the perfect way to keep your home comfortable and monitor your energy usage simultaneously. It is a very communicative device and will inform you of any changes or alerts in a quick, simple, and easy to understand way.
