Microsoft recently filed a patent for a “Hinged Device.” It’s possible that this unveils more details about the company’s rumored Surface Phone.

This particular patent was filed by the same engineers on the Surface team who are responsible for the Surface Book’s hinges.

This latest patent refers to a device that includes a foldable screen  and hinges, just as its name suggests. The patent seems to have been filed internationally back in June. The patent’s details are quite technical, and the part that is more “non-engineered” is the abstract, this refers to a “self-regulating hinge.”

The latest patent’s most important details

The description of the patent talks about hinged devices such as hinged computing ones. The example can include a first display that is positioned on the first portion, and it’s wrapped around the hinge end just in between the pair of self-regulating hinge assemblies. There is also a second display that is positioned on the second portion, and it’s wrapped just like the first example.

Considering these details and the image that goes with them, the device that we are discussing will definitely have two separate screens which are connected to one another by this self-regulated hinge. This will allow for the device to be folded flat. We can say without being wrong that the device is quite similar to Lenovo’s Yoga devices. According to the diagrams, this device will be able to flip over and then be used in a tent or nightstand mode. You will also be able to use it as one large screen.

There are also some tech details on the inner workings of the hinge. The hinges close a gap in the display, and according to the diagrams, a single user interface expands across the gaps between the two screens. There will also be an on-screen virtual keyboard and trackpad. This suggests that this device might have multi-use scenarios.

The device may run Andromeda OS

This machine will possibly run Andromeda OS, part of Windows 10 Core. It may also come with a dedicated notebook style journal application.

Despite the rumors that Microsoft is currently working on an ultimate mobile device, the company still has to confirm this officially. But, based on the latest patents, we can definitely say that Microsoft is at least thinking about such a foldable device.
