It seems that in case you need a product key for Windows 10 Creators Update, you might as well use an old one because it’ll work just fine.

Activate your copy of the new OS

Microsoft made a weird move when the company took the decision to offer Windows 10 as a free upgrade and then withdraw it. If you postponed upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or Windows 8.x due to costs, we now have some good news coming our way.

If you download a copy of Windows 10 Creators Update from Microsoft, you’ll see that you are asked for a product key. The surprise resides in the fact that you can use the license code from Windows 7, 8 and 8.1, because they all are going to work just fine.

To fix or not to fix

The free upgrade of Windows 10 ended in the middle of last year and users might have expected Microsoft to somehow fix this unofficial upgrade route, but we are glad to see that it’s still working even with Windows 10.

Bleeping Computer noted that Microsoft failed in blocking this upgrade method in Windows 10 Anniversary Update and then again in its Windows 10 Creators Update.

We can’t possibly know when or even if Microsoft is going to prevent activation by using this specific method, so you are advised to hurry up if you want to enjoy it while you still can. If this way of upgrading is right or wrong from a legal or moral point of view is a decision that only you are able to make, so we’ll leave it up to you.

For now, Microsoft is probably enthusiastic that users are upgrading to Windows 10 no matter the way in which they choose to do it.
