A new major update is here — at last. Microsoft somehow managed to sort it out before the end of April and thus the release name — Windows 10 April Update. This update has a lot of good things going for it in various sections of Windows 10. However, a hefty number of users run into the first problems. One of the most repetitive issues concerns the Sleep mode. Allegedly, Windows 10 won’t ‘wake up’ from Sleep after the April Update.

Windows 10 fails to wake up from sleep after the Windows 10 April Update is installed

1: Run Troubleshooter

Let’s start this with the most basic troubleshooting step. Hard restart your PC 3 times to open the Recovery menu. Boot in Safe Mode and put your PC to sleep. In case everything works fine while in the Safe Mode, continue with other steps. Otherwise, we recommend going to a final step or disabling Sleep Mode for a while. When this error occurred during the previous iterations, it was strangely resolved on its own after some time.

With that out of the way, you should give the built-in troubleshooter a go. Here’s how to run it on Windows 10:

  • Press Windows key + I to open the Settings app.
  • Choose Update & Security section.
  • Select Troubleshoot from the left pane.
  • Expand the Power troubleshooter.
  • Click on the “Run the troubleshooter” button and follow the instructions.

2: Disable Hibernate mode

The concept behind Sleep mode and Hibernate mode is to, after the predetermined time, Hibernate mode replaces Sleep. If Hibernate mode is enabled, of course. On the other hand, Hibernation rather than Sleep can be the cause of the problem. In order to address this, we recommend disabling Hibernate mode until the further updates fix the error.

If  you’re unsure how to do it, follow these steps:

  • In the Windows Search bar, type CMD. Right-click on Command Prompt and run it as an administrator.
  • In the command line, type powercfg /h off and press Enter.
  • Close Command Prompt and restart your PC.

3: Check the drivers

Drivers are another usual culprit when it comes to post-update issues. Every major update changes the drivers as same as the system does after the clean reinstallation. Now, there are some drivers which should occupy your attention more than the others (GPU, monitor, chipset drivers), but we recommend reinstalling the drivers you deem changed. If it worked with the Creators Update, the driver version should work with the April Update as well.

You can check them out in the Device Manager. Right-click Start and open Device Manager from the Power User menu. Once there, try to roll back the aforementioned drivers. In addition, you can disable Power Saving option on the Network adapter and look for changes.

4: Reset your PC or Roll Back to Creators Update

Finally, if the previous steps fell short, the only viable options concern recovery. You can either roll back Windows 10 to the previous release or reset your PC to factory settings. One way or another, the sleep mode issue which emerged after the April Update should be dealt with.

  • Press Windows key + I to open the Settings app.
  • Choose Update & Security section.
  • Select the Recovery from the left pane.
  • Under the “Get back to the previous version of Windows 10” option, click Get started.

And these steps if you want to reset your PC to factory settings keeping your files and applications in the process:

  • Press Windows key + I to open the Settings app.
  • Choose Update & Security section.
  • Select the Recovery from the left pane.
  • Under the “Reset this PC” option, click Get started.
  • Choose to keep your files and continue with the procedure.
