Microsoft has been working for a while on new battery-saving technology for its latest Windows 10 Redstone 3 build, and it’s currently testing it on devices running Intel 6th generation and beyond Core processors.

Meet Power Throttling, the battery-saving feature

On April 14, Microsoft rolled out the second Redstone 3 test build for computers and a couple of days ago, Microsoft officials revealed one of its new features called the Power Throttling.

This feature is now found in the Insider Preview build 16176 for Fast Ring PC testers. According to Microsoft executives, the Power Throttling uses “modern silicon capabilities” in order to run background apps in a more efficient and power-saving manner.

Early experiments

Microsoft revealed its intentions for this battery-saving feature for the first time this January when it tested Windows 10 Creators Update in build 15002. Microsoft has since then experimented with this feature along with the help of some testers, revealing that the feature can save up to 11% of battery life. The company continued working on this feature and testing it to help users enjoy a boost in battery life.

Power Throttling compatibilities

The latest news underlines how Power Throttling currently works with devices running Intel’s Speed Shift technology, Intel’s 6th generation and beyond Core processors including Skylake and Kaby Lake. Microsoft is also planning on supporting other processors with this new feature in the future.

Power Throttling is a feature designed to work only with out-of-the-box apps according to Microsoft officials. On the other hand, developers may tune in with the new programming interfaces to be provided by Microsoft in the company’s future test builds.
