The Remote Desktop Protocol allows you to connect to other remote computers from the host. However, users are getting an error message: The remote computer that you are trying to connect is redirecting the connection to a different address.
Avoid redirected requests to your remote computer
When you try to connect to a remote computer, the remote computer may redirect your connection request.
If your connection is being redirected, then it is likely that there is a firewall preventing your computer from connecting to the remote computer.
You can disable the firewall to fix the error or try other solutions as listed below.

This is an issue that occurs when a remote computer is redirecting you to another remote computer. It could be that the Remote desktop is not working or another issue such as a malware infection.
Why is the remote computer that I’m trying to connect to redirecting?
If you’re trying to connect to a remote computer and it’s redirecting your connection, it may be because of one of these reasons:
- Malware infection – Malware can infect a computer and use up all of its resources, which can cause a slow Internet connection and make it difficult for you to connect.
- Firewall blocking – Some firewalls will block any inbound connections from unknown hosts by default. This means that if you try to connect to a server, the firewall will block it and redirect your connection.
- The remote computer is using a proxy server – The proxy server will only allow connections through certain ports and protocols, so it may be blocking the connection from your computer.
What can I do to fix if my Remote computer is redirecting?

If you have a firewall installed, check if there are any outbound connections.
Check your router logs to see if there is any unusual activity.
Access your antivirus logs and check if anything suspicious has been detected.
Check your system event log on Windows.
You can also use third-party applications such as event log monitoring software to detect if someone has accessed your computer remotely.
You can’t prevent people from accessing your computer remotely, but you can take steps to make it more difficult for someone to do so. To keep your remote connections secure, do the following:
- Update your antivirus software regularly – The best method is to use a firewall or antivirus software that it’s up-to-date with the latest definitions for detecting malware and includes real-time protection.
- Install a VPN service – When you use a VPN service, you are able to connect to the internet safely without worrying about hackers or other people accessing your data.
- Use good passwords – Although you can use Remote Desktop without a password, it is recommended you use one. Passwords are what keep people out of your accounts, so make sure yours are strong.
Hopefully, you can now connect to your intended Remote desktop device without being redirected.
